Basic necessary information on roads and weather condition can be checked here. Plan your holidays ahead to avoid last minute surprises.
In summer, weather changes greatly during the day, there is a wide temperature range between day and nightime. Take into account that, especially in January, temperatures can reach 30º C (86ºF) during the day, and drop to 12ºC (53ºF) or 10ºC (50ºF) after sun set when the wind picks up. It can get even colder in the middle of the night. We suggest you bring enough warm clothing: a waterproof jacket, a light fleece or sweatshirt and clothes that can be worn in layers to avoid being caught off guard by the changing Andean weather.
You will not find many bugs in San Martín de los Andes due to its cold weather. There are practically no insects except for horseflies and mosquitoes on exceptional occasions.
You shouldn’t worry about poisonous snakes or menacing spiders, you may only come across a small harmless kind of snake (culebra).
There are pumas (mountain lions), but they never come close to people. However, rural settlers have to deal with them in winter because they frequently attack sheep. At the same time, fox may profit from a visit to the chicken coop every now and then, but don't worry, chances are your paths will never cross.
Wild boar don't come near people either, and red deer are harmless unless they make the fatal mistake of crossing the road in front of a vehicle. This happens quite frequently so we suggest driving carefully and paying attention to the signs.
During the past years, snow fall has decreased. Warmer global temperatures and radiation of heat generated by an ever-growing population have made snow falls and snow accumulation less frequent. However, in the mountains and especially in Chapelco Ski Resort it snows frequently. Chapelco is the most important ski resort in the province of Neuquén and it is located more than 6,500 ft above sea level.
In the mountains, accumulated snow sometimes reaches 3.5ft at the bottom of the ski resort located 3,940 ft above sea level. The summits usually have more than 10ft of snow, ensuring perfect skiing conditions.
Remember that most access roads to Lanín National Park are gravel roads and harsh winter conditions can cause many of them to be closed at several times during the ski season, hindering access to many tourist circuits.
Prices in the area are in themselves an issue. Take into account that due to great distances from the manufacturing centers, prices are higher than in the big cities. Therefore San Martín cannot be considered cheap. However, ignoring these reasons, has created an erroneous concept of elitist city, not taking into consideration the ample and varied range of services San Martín de los Andes offers its visitors.
You can adapt your holidays to your budget. You can choose lodging anywhere from a cheaper hostel to a five star hotel. Likewise, dining can be solved either by buying groceries at the supermarket or getting take out from the deli and staying in, or by enjoying your regional dish of choice together with good music and excellent service in one of our many restaurants.
